Dizzie Rascal- DREAM. Representaion
Dizzee Rascal Dream.
Narrative: The narrative of the video is Dizzees rise to success. It is also to show his young audience that it doesn't matter what background you come from weather its rich or poor you can still become successful and do what you love as long as you never give up.
Genre: pop/grime
Technical Codes
Setting:
Props, special effects and costumes:
The symbolism of puppets also shows the lack of control the working class and shows that the white middle class has all the control and power
The props used are puppets which shows people such as normal people fighting with the police. By using puppets makes the conflict look less graphic then what it really is in reality
Dizzie however isn’t a puppet as he doesn’t have string attached which shows as he has become successful he has gained control of himself and power
However even though he is no longer a puppet he still has to get permission to do his own thing such as sing his song as he lives in a little box in the middle-class white laddie’s world and he only comes out when she lets him. This suggests that no matter how successful you are black people and other ethnic minority groups will always have less power than white middle class people.
Lighting & Colour:The lighting and colours used aren’t typical of the videos genre as there are a lot of pastel colours used which connotes happiness and calmness however usually in an urban grime music video the colours are dark to convey the violence and poverty going on in the surrounding areas.
Representation of gender, age and ethnicity: The women is represented as the stereotypical 1950s white middle class women, this is shown by the clothes she is wearing as she is wearing a formal blazer with a matching skirt with a rose on it. However, she dismisses the fact that society was patriarchal as she is the matriarch in the video you can see this as she is the one that addresses the audience ‘hello boys and girls’ and she is the one that gives Dizzee permission to come out of his box. This in contrast to Dizzee who is portrayed as an unruly young black man who is part of a gang, this is shown by his clothing where he wears an oversized red tracksuit with trainers this makes him seem like the stereotypical black youth.
