Analyse the representation of gender in ‘the man’ and ‘riptide’ (30 marks)

In both ‘The man’ and ‘Riptide’ women are represented sexually and objects for men to play with. This is shown to us in ‘the man’ when he is on the boat and he is surrounded by half naked females, and later on in the scene we are shown him leaving a room with a naked female in a bed which suggest to us that the women were only there for his sexual pleasure. This is similar to women in ‘Riptide’ where women are sexualised where in a scene a woman is being photographed from behind whilst taking off her bikini, which connotes that a man is watching her who could possibly have the intentions of sexually assaulting her. By sexualizing's women, it reinforces the idea of patriarchy.

In ‘the man’ the male character is represented as a loving and caring father even though he has a lot of work to do. This is shown to us when he goes out with his daughter to a park like setting where a lot of mothers and their children are there and when the mothers see him they are all shocked and surprised as men aren’t seen to be looking after the children as that is the ‘mothers’ job. By doing this he goes against society’s expectations of men as men are seen not to take part in their children’s life and are more invested in their work, and it shows men can do the things women do. This in contrast to how men are represented in ‘riptide’ as men conform into male stereotypes, this is shown to us in the scene where it’s a book on “how to photograph women”, this connotes that the men in the video want to take pictures of women without them knowing which could be them sexualisng them.

In 'the man' men are represented as disrespectful and having no care for others, this is shown to us when the man is on the train smoking (which isn't allowed) when he is surrounded by others and then he goes and puts the ashes in a ladies handbag. And even though he can see that the elderly women are coughing due to the smoke he continues to smoke as if he is the only one there. This reinforces male stereotypes that men lack respect and are self-centered. This is similar to the representation of men in 'riptide' even though men aren't actually seen doing the disrespectful actions we see the impact of a man’s disrespect towards a women, this is shown to us during the close up shot of the women singing where we see her with bruises on her face and blood running down her neck and she is constantly glancing to the side which suggest she has been a victim of domestic abuse.

In ‘the man’ men are represented as people with power and well respected, this is shown to us by the mans costume of a suit and tie which connotes that he is a man of power and could potentially have a high status in his work place. He is also shown to be well respected in the first scene where he comes into work and everyone stops doing what they’re doing to stand up and congratulate him for what it seems to be because he turned up to work. This contrasts with the opposite gender in ‘riptide’ where women are represented as victims through many ways such as being victims of domestic abuse and victims of stalking. We can gather that women are victims of stalking through the low angled camera shot of someone (most likely a man) standing in a bush which connotes that they’re spying on her or have been looking at her for a long period of time. We can also tell that women in the video are victims of stalking by the women in the video mostly being filmed from behind which connotes that they don’t know they’re being watched, and this gives the audience the idea that women are not respected and that they’re victims.
