Radio Industry Research Task

Summarise what   podcasting  is and the ways it is different from traditional radio broadcasting for the producers and the audience. Consider the platforms used to promote and deliver podcasts and find a couple of examples.

Podcasting is online demand talk radio, you can use a podcast anywhere and can find a podcast on any topic you are interested in from comedy to news. You can access a podcast from apps available on phones for example iphone has its own podcast app. One difference between a podcast and a traditional radio broadcast is that podcast tend to target a niche audience as they tend to focus on a specific topic unlike a radio broadcasting service where they tend to target a mass audience by playing trending songs that the wider audience would enjoy. Another significant difference is that a podcast is pre recorded which gives the person recording time to edit things out if they made a mistake whereas a radio broadcast is recorded live where they cannot cover up mistakes.

Define and give an example of a commercial  and a public Service  radio broadcaster, explaining the key differences.

Commercial broadcasting, also known as private broadcasting is the broadcasting of radio and tv programs that are owned by private media companies. In the UK commercial broadcasting coexists with public broadcasting and example of commercial broadcasting is Kiss radio. A public service broadcaster are independent, non commercial tv stations that are operated by the government. They are broadcasted for the publics benefit. An example of a public service broadcaster is the BBC and we can tell it is a public service broadcaster because it has news channels and radio stations that are made to inform the public.

Explain the purpose, mission and values of the BBC and what it is meant to do for the public.

The purpose of the BBC is to provide information about educational content for children and teenagers around the UK and to inform the public about different subjects happening around the world. The BBC's mission is to act in the best of the publics interest and to give high quality services that informative, educational and enjoyable to the audience. Some of the BBC's values are to put the audience at heart, respect each other and celebrate diversity take pride in delivering quality and money and many more.

Give at least one example each of how the BBC broadcasts or provides content nationally, locally and globally

The BBC provides content nationally, locally and globally by having different channels for example for 'BBC News' they have BBC London news, BBC news Scotland and BBC news wales they have these different news channels to insure everyone around the UK has access to the news nationally and the important news in their local area. The BBC also helps provide content globally by having their radio stations available in 40 different languages meaning countries that do not speak English can access the news as well.

Based on the types of programmes available, the branding of the station , the choice of presenters and listening to the content, explain the general  content, identity and audience of Radio 4 and  give some  examples of speech-based radio programmes from the  station.
The audience for BBC radio 4 are adults aged 35 and above. The content on the station ranges from social to political issues with a highlight based around Barrack Obama. They also have an article for parents on 'coping with sensory overload' which is based on having an autistic child which many parents in the Uk have to deal with. An example of a speech based radio program on the station is the Battersea Poltergeist.
