Paper 1 section A- Beyoncé music video initial research. Best Thing I Never Had & Pretty Hurts
Best Thing I Never Had
Style of the video- The video is primarily focused on telling the narrative behind the song. This is done by the video showing scenes with Beyoncé (the main character) with her life now getting married to a better man and scenes where it shows the character in her past with her ex partner who did her wrong. This narrative reflects the song as there are many lyrics such as 'bet it sucks to be you right now' to show that Beyoncé has a better partner now and that her ex partner missed out on having her.
Star Persona- The video highlights Beyoncé's persona as it shows her as an independent women as she had the courage to leave her ex boyfriend who didn't treat her right and then she found a man who does. This also shows her a positive role model to younger women who may be with a man who doesn't treat them right and could inspire them to leave.
Themes and issues in the video- The theme of relationships and love are portrayed in the video, this is done by the scene of a wedding and Beyoncé's costume of her being in underwear which could represent the theme of love.
Representation- Women are represented at the start of the video as sexual as Beyoncé is in 'sexy' underwear which sexualises her which reinforces the stereotype that women are sex objects.
Pretty Hurts
Style of the video- The video is primarily focused on telling the narrative behind the song. This is done by the video being based on a beauty pageant which only shows the smiles and the happy side of it and then showing behind the scenes where we see how women have to get down to a certain weight and have a certain amount of fat on them in order to get into the pageant and shows how these expectations knock down peoples self esteem and confidence.
Star Persona- The video highlights Beyoncé's confidence when she is told she isn't good enough she still carried on in the pageant confidently.
Themes and issues in the video- The themes presented in the video are ambition and body positivity.
Representation- Women reinforce stereotypes that you have to be 'skinny' and not 'fat' to be seen as beautiful.
