PAPER 1 A Key text : Beyonce FORMATION MUSIC VIDEO ( 2016)
Contexts- The music video explores the flooding in New Orleans which is a result of Hurricane Katrina. The video also portrays police brutality going on in America by sitting on top of a police car which has connotations of power as her positioning is higher than the police car, the car then sank into the water at the end of the video which could suggest at the end of the day police brutality can be defeated. She also references black children are beautiful without conforming to the western idea of beauty by showing black children one of which was her daughter wearing their hair naturally in an afro.
Star Persona- Beyoncé presents herself as a confident women this is done by her making direct mode of address through out the while video. However she is also sexulised in one of the scenes as she is wearing a tight fitted bodysuit which shows her chevage with suspenders which are associated with seduction and romance. Her choice of costume doesn't just reflect her as an artist it reflects the themes in the video for example she wears an antebellum dress in one of the scenes to represent the theme of slavery which goes against the stereotypical pop music video culture where women are mainly dressed in tight fitted revealing clothing for the whole video.
Representation- Black women are represented as powerful even if you aren't as successful as Beyoncé, this can be seen in the scene of the women in the hair shop making direct mode of address which connotes confidence and with the hand on hip symbolizes power and attitude. Black women are also represented as beautiful without conforming to the western ideology of beauty, this is done by all the women in the video wearing their natural hair in an afro or in braids which represents black culture.
