Paper 2 television: life on mars
Genre:
The prodominate genre of life on mars is crime drama which also has a sub genre of science fiction. Throughout the episode the show follows the codes and conventions of. crime dram with there being a murder case that needs to be solved, the props that are used in the show also follow the codes and conventions of a crime drama as we see police cars and the standard yellow police tape at the scene of the crime. However the show also has an element of science fiction and we can see this in the episode when the main character time travels back in time which is a common convention of the science fiction genre.
Narrative:
The first episode of life on mars is a restricted narrative as we only know how much the main character knew and found out stuff at the same time he did for example, near the end of the episode we find out why he was sent back in time at the same time he found out why he got sent back in time.
At the neighing of the episode there were many enigmas however by the end of the first episode some of the engnimas were solved and some rammed unsolved. For example at the beginning we just like Sam (the main character) didn't know why he was sent back in time but by the end of the episode we find out that he was sent back to solve the case he was working on in the present time where his girlfriend Maya was a victim to the serial killer and/or kidnapper. However an enigma that was left unsolved was whether Sam was actually sent back in time or if he was dreaming whilst in a comma as he was involved in a car accident at the beginning and we the audience didn't see what happened after.
Representation:
Gender in the police force are represented in two different ways. In the modern day narrative the view of women in the police force are represented as equal to men and worthy of having a job as we see Sam's seen to be girlfriend Maya is a detective which would never happen in the 1970s which is shown later in the show when Sam goes back in time. This is in contrast to how women were viewed in the police force in the 1970s, when Sam is first transported to the 70s we see in the workplace that there are no women of a high status there. There is a women police constable however her values and opinions are not valued, this is scene in a scene where Sam asks her to project her ideas on the case as she has a psychology degree and all the men disregard what she says even though she has more knowledge than them. Throughout the 1970s part of the episode we hear the men repeatedly make sexual comments and remarks about women which shows the audience that men in the 60s views women as sex objects and that their opinions didn't matter because of their gender.
Ethnicity Is also represented in two opposite ways. In the modern day narrative of the episode the police and the workplace was diverse and had people working from different backgrounds and races, which is in contrast ti the work place in the 1970s where the whole police force was purely white British males. By showing the two contrasting representations of ethnicity shows the audience how the police force has changed through the years and how they have become more inclusive.
The character Nelson is represented as the stereotypical Jamaican we can see this by him faking his Jamaican accent in order to gain customers, but in reality he has a British accent just like the other white men. This conveys society naive views on ethnicity as they think that
